Weekly Update -October 25th edition

- Coolest roundabout discoveries on the net..
I was out and about on the net, following up on some leads. I had been turned onto a band Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls, due to their cool cover of 'Crazy Train' found on their debut release The Vain Hope Of Horse

'Crazy Train is an incredible song as you all should know.  Who doesn't know the Ozzy track most recently made famous again on the MegaMind Soundtrack.  But this is the perfect cover as there is a fantastic departure musically from the original. It's only in instances like this that you are forced to get to know the original song, instead of just banging along to a tune you've known for years and never actually listened to deeply. Of course a click or two later, I'm on the video for 'Anarchist Girl' by Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls, from their Packed for Exile (Sampler EP)

A few clicks later, I'm checking out their site (www.jasonheathandthegreedysouls.com).  One thing leads to another, and some how I end up at Noisetrade.com downloading some free tracks.

I like Noisetrade as you can sort and sift through the hundreds of bands you don't and could, maybe should know.  If you're leery you can download for free.  You can also chose a donation rate to compensate for what you download.

- Music News..
Annie & the Beekeepers rebuild!  In an email from the Annie & the Beekeepers E-list we find out:

"It's been a year since the last tour with The original Beekeepers. I've spent this time writing new material, performing solo, and playing shows, here and there, with a sampling of NYC's finest musicians (in my opinion) in an effort to find the necessary inspiration to move forward with purpose. Thankfully, this inspiration has been found. Among the aforementioned musicians are Guitarist/Mandolinist/Vocalist, Andrew Michael Buri, and Bassist/Vocalist/Multi-instrumentalist, Jeni Magana. Please join me in welcoming these two into the new cast of Beekeepers. With a deep respect for the band's foundation, we have decided to carry on the name and spirit of the original project! Bear with us as we update our websites etc " If you are reading this for the first time now, you may have missed them in Boston, but there is an upcoming show in NYC November 11th @ the Living Room!

WISH LIST -
No F**king Messiah by Pearl Jam.   This is the greatest bootleg of all-time.  It really has it all.  Live produced performances (SNL), demos, soon to be released tracks, acoustic, excellent covers and a great booklet lamenting the loss of Kurt Cobain by his friend/nemesis Eddie Vedder.

This bootleg is unrivaled as far as unoffical music production goes.  I was lucky enough to buy it new just before the release of Vitology, at a random Radio Shack at the Outer Banks in North Carolina.  Approximately fifteen years ago, after overuse and poor quality control, the disc is falling apart.  It barely plays, and will not rip onto a computer.

It is available on Amazon, but I just don't trust a so called "used - very good" copy to have not degraded like mine.  Plus the prices are outrageous.

1. 'Not For You'                                            SNL - 4-16-94
2. 'Rearview Mirror'                                      SNL - 4-16-94
3.  'Daughter'                                                 SNL - 4-16-94
4.  '(Sitting On) The Dock of The Day'           1993
5.  'Angel'                                                       Demo
6.  'I've Got A Feeling'                                   Demo  - Beatles cover
7.  'Alone'                                                        Ten B Side
8.  'Betterman'                                                 Atlanta Fox Theater 4-4-94
9.  'Already In Love'                                       Atlanta Fox Theater 4-4-94
10.  'Crazy Mary'                                           Live Victoria Williams Cover
11.  'Three Days'                                           Live and soon to be released track - 'Last Exit'
12.  'Small Town'                                            Live Elderly Woman 3-9-93
13.  'I Won't Back Down'                               Eddie Vedder solo covering Tom Petty

14.  'Wash'
15.  'Alive'                                                      14-17 Are at the Virgin Megastore in Paris acoustic
16.   'Black'
17.   'Porch'

I have completely lost the last four tracks, which may be the best four acoustic Pearl Jam tracks of all time.  One of these days, I'll figure out a way to get them back

Premier Single : Birds Over Arkansas "Forgotten Lights"

Philly/CT band  Birds Over Arkansas ' is currently recording their full length release as a follow up to their 2014  Behind The Lights  EP.  Root Down In The Shadow is proud to debut the first single from this release, "Forgotten Lights." "Forgotten Lights" was first teased in an exclusive release for a RDITS house show in March featuring BOA , Kevin Killen , Chelsea Mitchell , and Max García Conover . Finally ready for the masses, "Forgotten Lights" is helplessly watching a loved one slip away into dementia. The song starts as a mellow Americana groove, and the split at the outro introduces the progressive rock elements to bring in the lyric "the flame blew out again." This was the pivotal point in the lyrics, signifying the change from someone who was slowly losing their faculties who has now seemingly become a different person. The switch from the easy, mellow groove to the frenetic time signature embodies this. Scott Haskitt - ...

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve...

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud...
