Ali Wadsworth + Satellite Hearts Cover The Districts "Stay Open" for #CoverClub Season 2

Welcome to Season Two of Philly-centric video series, Cover Club.  Cover Club is best conceptualized as “A special brand of Philly covers”, akin to The Onion’s AV Undercover series but with one caveat: the song being covered must originally be from a Philly artist.

Ali Wadsworth + Satellite Hearts are two names that were all over the Philly map in recent years.  Ali Wadsworth most recently put out an album (Ali Wadsworth) of songs written by her friends and has contributed vocals for countless others including Kalob Griffin Band, Aaron & the Spell, Kuf Knotz, and Small House.  Satellite Hearts just dropped a new single to tease their upcoming album, but spent most of 2014 backing Kuf Knotz, Ali Wadsworth, Ron Gallo & others.  Meanwhile they're up for the Indie Rock Band of the Year and will be a featured performer for the 4th Annual TriState Indie Awards

The Districts on the other hand is a band whose name that has been popping up all over the world in the last year.  The Lititz, Pa fellas have played pretty much every festival on the Western Hemisphere & have done a BBC Session cementing a path to rock stardom for these young dudes.  Just this last week, their major label debut A Flourish and Spoil, earning a spot on the Billboard "Heatseakers Albums" charts, at #7.

Add all three together and you have a killer Cover Club session recorded at Cambridge Sound Studios.  Ali Wadsworth chose The Districts "Stay Open", a somewhat lost track for the band.  It's neither on their wildly popular indie release Telephone nor on the brand new A Flourish and A Spoil but on the Districts EP put out when they signed to Fat Possum that per the description "a collection that features two new tracks and three re-mastered tracks off their 2012 self-released album."

Wadsworth explained, "We chose the song, because it rules. As you know Marley McNamara is my manager AND The Districts manager AND my roommate so it's safe to say I hear a LOT about those boys.  They've become great friends and I've become a huge fan of their music.  They're a SICK BAND.  When Marley played "Stay Open" for me I immediately wanted to sing it.  Robbie has an incredible voice with BALLS and I really admire voices that have that power and presence. And with the Satellite Hearts behind me i knew we could do it justice.

what's next for Ali Wadsworth?
"What's next for me? I've been writing my face off and I've been playing a lot of guitar.  mom bought me this bright red shredder guitar for me for christmas, it was fun and probably my favorite present ever, but not "Ali" so with mom's permission I exchanged it for a gorgeous Telecastor. It was love at first sight.

I just played my first show playing electric the whole way through this past Wednesday opening up for Jamie Cullum (again!) at the Keswick Theatre. It was so scary but it went really well, and have to say it was a HUGE step for me. I AM NOW A GUITAR PLAYER. So new songs, recording VERY soon with the Satellite Hearts before they become huge superstars and take over the world. I will be revealing a buttload of new songs at the boot and saddle, as well as my hot new guitar. weeee! It's so exciting :)"

Premier Single : Birds Over Arkansas "Forgotten Lights"

Philly/CT band  Birds Over Arkansas ' is currently recording their full length release as a follow up to their 2014  Behind The Lights  EP.  Root Down In The Shadow is proud to debut the first single from this release, "Forgotten Lights." "Forgotten Lights" was first teased in an exclusive release for a RDITS house show in March featuring BOA , Kevin Killen , Chelsea Mitchell , and Max García Conover . Finally ready for the masses, "Forgotten Lights" is helplessly watching a loved one slip away into dementia. The song starts as a mellow Americana groove, and the split at the outro introduces the progressive rock elements to bring in the lyric "the flame blew out again." This was the pivotal point in the lyrics, signifying the change from someone who was slowly losing their faculties who has now seemingly become a different person. The switch from the easy, mellow groove to the frenetic time signature embodies this. Scott Haskitt - ...

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve...

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud...
